Use This Oil Everyday to Boost Your Health

The word is getting out about the health benefits of coconut oil. Coconut oil can help your body run smoother in a few different ways. Studies have shown that coconut oil can help your body resist viruses and bacteria that can cause illness, and even fight off yeast and candida. Coconut oil can also help with hormonal balance for thyroid and blood-sugar control. This “miracle” oil can increase metabolism and energy, making you feel great!

Aside from consuming coconut oil, you can even use it externally as a moisturizer. I used a combination of coconut oil and cocoa butter as a moisturizer for my belly during pregnancy and I’m convinced it kept me stretch mark free. I liked it as a moisturizer so much that I started using it all over my body. My husband wondered why we were always running out of coconut oil for cooking though!

I have talked about some of these health benefits before, and often get asked how to use coconut oil.
Coconut oil can be used as a substitution for many other unhealthy foods such as margarine or even coffee creamer.

Here are a few ways to get more of it into your diet, while taking away the unhealthy stuff.

1. In tea or coffee

  • You can start your day with coconut oil by adding it to a hot cup of coffee or tea. To make it taste good in your drink, you have to blend it well so that it creates a creamy, rich consistency; otherwise you’ll get an oily layer on top which is not that appetizing. Here is my recipe for delicious creamy coffee that is free of junk like coffee creamer or sugar:

  • 1 cup coffee or tea
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (you can use 2 tbsp if you really like coconut oil)
  • 1 tsp butter (preferably organic grassfed source)
  • ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • A few drops of stevia (optional)

  • Blend all ingredients in a blender on high speed for 20 seconds until frothy – be careful with the hot liquid!

2. In stir frys

  • Coconut oil has a high smoke point and stable saturated fats thereby making it a good choice for stir fry cooking. You get a little bit of coconut flavour, but it’s not overpowering.

3. For frying

  • Stable oils like coconut oil are much better for frying. Olive oil and other oils have a lower smoke point so they are not suitable for frying at high temperatures. If olive oil is used for frying at too high of a temperature, it oxidizes and becomes rancid which is known to lead to cardiovascular disease. My favorite use for coconut oil in frying is coconut shrimp (which is shrimp breaded with unsweetened shredded coconut) – you get twice the coconut in one meal!

4. In baking

  • If you are familiar with The Dessert Angel treats, you’ll know that coconut oil is used in many of the recipes. I have created the recipes to be free of any unhealthy oils such as margarine or vegetable oils. In some recipes, I do use olive oil or butter – both of which are healthy oil choices – but if you like the taste of coconut oil and want to incorporate more into your diet, you can easily swap out the olive oil/butter for the same amount of coconut oil.

Hope you’re having a great week and get to enjoy some coconut oil goodness!
